The concept is good of capturing the scrapings into a bag but the tool is made of cheap metals. It feels ok in the hand and attaches properly to a extension pole. However after a few scrapes the structural integrity fails and the angle of the blade starts to change. I completed my project with trouble and modifications to the tool. The wetted popcorn becomes quite heavy and added to the problem of tool deflection, hard to control the blade when you have 2-4lbs of scraping in a bag. Better solution was to use plastic sheeting and create a tube that you clip in place of the trash bag. On the other end of the tube you attach a large 40gallon bag. I did all this with tape but maybe there could be a better way to connect them. At the end of the experiment/job we go it done with 80% less mess on the floor. Would do it again this way but want to find a better tool.Wish I had this when I did my master bedroom. I bought it to do the rest of my house & completed 4 other rooms in less time than my master took. It was mostly because of less cleanup, but it works far better than using a drywall blade.I very much wanted to like using this tool. I found however that it is heavier than a 12” putty knife and it doesn’t have the slight curve which prevents digging into the sheetrock while scraping the popcorn off, due to the weight of the tool and the added debris in the bag. I found myself not being able to be at a tight angle against the ceiling. I saw that I would have to do more repair work. Therefore I rather would protect the area than use the tool. You have to protect the area anyway (unless you’re going to trash the floor)I’m 5’4” and don’t have exceptional upper body strength. This was difficult to use and the trash bag didn't fit well enough that most ceiling was going on to floor. Found it easier to use a plastic putty knife and hold bag as I scraped.I had to round off the corners so it would not damage the sheetrock. I also had to bend the handle to adjust the angle. It sounded like a really great idea. It gets heavy really quick and I have more control with the drywall knife. I usually hold a dust pan underneath to catch the popcorn. This actually works better for me. I put the tool away quickly. This works, but I found it easier to use a plastic 6" scraper instead. We bought a house that we didn't have to move into right away and decided that we wanted to paint as well as remove the popcorn. I bought this and used it and it works okay, but there's an easier way. When secure a bag to the scraper, the bag gets very heavy very quickly. This makes the task that much more laborious. Plus the bag needs emptied or replaced pretty quickly. I will say that the ability to attach this to a telescoping pole helped me use it over an open stairwell which would have been difficult otherwise. Two other drawbacks are that the sticker on the scraper eventually begins to collect debris and negatively impacts your ability to get a good scrape in each pass. Also, the rounded tops of the rivets can/will scrape the drywall and can cause indentations that may need to be fixed depending upon what your end goal may be. (we painted the ceiling with flat ceiling paint and I needed to make a couple small fixes). What I found to be the best is after you spray the popcorn with water use a 6" plastic scraper that you'd use for spackle instead. Scraping popcorn is a messy process. There's almost no way around that and the easiest way is to spend 30 minutes to lay plastic down on the floor in a good enough way that you can clean up after you've scraped. In my 2300 sq.ft. house, I used this in 1.5 bedrooms and an open stairwell before abandoning it for the plastic scraper. You could make an argument about which method was more labor intensive, but I think the quality of using the plastic scraper was far superior. my two cents. In theory this product is great. In practice, it’s pretty useless. The actual scraper blade is way too thick and not nearly sharp enough to take the texture off efficiently. With a bag attached, maybe it collects half (a generous estimate) of the ceiling texture. So you’re still going to be doing a giant amount of cleaning. The bag attached also makes it super heavy very quickly. There is threading so you could attach a pole to the handle, but it would be impossible to get the right angle to scrape the texture from the ground. So, I gave it two stars because the theory and design are clever, but the actual product falls wayyyyy short. This tool worked excellent for me. I'd estimate at least 97 % of the mess falls right in the bag. I did a 16' x 16' room so far and I was squirting the water and removing the texture and working around furniture ( covered of course ) I think if you had a clear room and a helper wetting it this size room could have been done in well under 1/2 hour. I used plastic bags from the grocery store doubled up just in case and I changed bags 3 times which was no big deal with the supplied clips. This tool won't get closer than about an inch from the wall because of the frame for the bag. They need to have a smaller version of this tool with the frame flush with the scraper to get right to the wall. You may get a little bit missing the bag this way but it would help I think with even less mess. I did take a file and round the sharp corners before I started as per the advice here. I maybe got a couple extremely small diggers in the drywall but nothing very minor touch up with putty didn't fix. After reading all the negative reviews and people having trouble with it, I was tempted to make a video of me using it right out of the box for an honest review... I didn't bother but I wish I had. I was praising this tool right from the first swipe. That's the good news. The bad news is your still left with a powdery residue that needs to be sanded or at least I was. I used an electric orbital sander and only needed one light pass over the entire ceiling but what a dusty mess. I have a lot more to do thru out our house and won't attempt this again without a sanding/vacuum attachment. I sealed up the room including door cracks etc. put a fan in a window and that wasn't too bad but this was by far the worst part of the job. But as far as the popcorn texture and this tool , I highly recommend it for the price. This tool might work in a very specific situation where the popcorn ceiling is loosely attached. In case of older popcorn ceilings that sometimes are painted, this tool is not much use. Additionally, the idea of having a bag might be appealing in the beginning but emptying the bag or replacing and reclipping is time-consuming. I found that better is to wet/spray the ceiling to avoid the dust and let popcorn drop on plastic vinyl that covers the floor. Takes a minute to clean up afterward just wrapping whole plastic tarp with popcorn on it.I suspect that next iteration if that idea maybe with vacuum connection will be more successful. This one is just 2 starts IMO.I use this at every jobw hen i need to remove popcorn ceiling.. it does the trick and limits the mess, you still need to cover up the floors with plastic before working.. this dosnt eliminate all the mess, but it does limit it a lot. This also gets really heavy after a few minutes, youll have to empty out the bag quite often. The clips that come with this get lost also.. its a shame that theyt dont give you extras with your purchase.Neck of the tool is relatively thin material and with even light pressure it will bend and deform requiring you to straighten it every 5-10 minutes. Scraping edge is very full, don't expect it to be like a drywall knife edge. I'm doing the job with a 10" tape knife instead now. This lightweight piece of tin like metal is next to useless for a ceiling that has been there for any amount of time. Regardless of the amount of water sprayed, this scraper is practically useless. Don’t waste your money THIS ITEM IS NOT RETURNABLE!.The product is great in theory, will post a better review(hopefully) when I have finished my ceilings.
